There were equal amounts of cheers and tears as hundreds of riders, crew, volunteers, and supporters arrived in Key West on Nov. 18 for the last time. The 20th and final SMART Ride punctuate a movement that saw a community form under the organization’s umbrella and take on an organic life of its own.

Piles of food stretched out across the front lawn of Sanctuary Church. Hundreds of cars stretched around the building and back out onto Federal Hwy. The massive food giveaway on the Saturday before Thanksgiving encapsulates what the holidays should mean: gratitude from those receiving and gratitude from those giving.

It’s been seen it in movies and TV shows like ER and Grey’s Anatomy: dramatic scenes where patients are shocked back to life. While those may be over-the-top recreations, the situations are very much a part of real life.
