In a landmark move highlighting the ongoing struggle for inclusivity and fairness, transgender swimmer Lia Thomas has initiated legal proceedings against World Aquatics, the governing body for elite swimming competitions. This challenge, presented to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, targets explicitly portions of the gender inclusion policy enacted by World Aquatics on June 20, 2022. This lawsuit marks a pivotal moment in the broader dialogue on the rights of transgender athletes in sports.
As soon as fossil-fuel financed Donald Trump was sworn into office, he got busy destroying the nation’s climate progress. In June 2017, Trump announced that the U.S. would withdraw from the Paris Treaty, shamefully walking away from a global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the only signatory country in the world to do so.
My mom died from COVID four years ago, just after Mother’s Day. I couldn’t write about it until I could be honest about who she was, a feat complicated by my then-pending Congressional race, which I lost in spectacular fashion. Apparently climate change isn’t at the top of voters’ concerns. Yet.
If I was in college today, with the same longing for peace and equality I had then and have now, I’d be in a tent protesting the slaughter of 34,000 women and children by a country with limitless weapons of war. In fact, I did.
Recent polls suggest half the country may vote against their own self-interests in November. The self-sabotage is head-turning: Christians who defend Donald Trump’s debauchery, poor people who give their money to a billionaire with rotating Ponzi schemes, and pensioners who don’t understand that tax cuts for the 1% threaten their own entitlements.
Recently Happening OUT Travel (happeningout.travel), a travel club serving the LGBT community, advertised a series of travel packages that promises to take the queer traveler to some interesting places: Gay Days at Munich Oktoberfest, Medellin Pride, and 2025 World Pride in Washington DC.
