Unveiled amidst a daily grind of outrage and threats, Donald Trump’s latest swindle, $100,000 “Trump watches,” has been largely overlooked by voters and mainstream media. It shouldn’t be. Trump has made the watches available for purchase through virtually un-traceable Bitcoin; any foreign actor seeking favor with Trump can purchase one, two, or 50 of them.

As I spend time with my friends here in South Florida since my life partner Brian and I moved back in February of this year, there has been a recurring conversation that seems to take place in just about every visit.
I used to be a Republican. Right out of college, I worked for the legislature, then governor, of a conservative state. Governor Robert Orr (R-Ind.) was disciplined and kind, and his ethics were beyond reproach.
Recently, the Ron DeSantis Administration posted signs on interstate highways welcoming visitors to the “Free State of Florida.” The idea of Florida as a uniquely free state is a favorite of DeSantis, who has been using it for years. During his second inauguration in January 2023, the governor bragged about his state’s opposition to federal policies and his war against “woke” ideologies.

When Democratic vice-presidential nominee Tim Walz called the GOP weird, it was the understatement of the year. The Republican Party has degenerated into a repository of freaks, flakes and frauds. The most common mask for Republican immorality is right-wing Christianity, which launders increasingly brazen lies and licentiousness. Under the banner of Trump, the GOP has shed its piety to shamelessly embrace its pathology.
