When Lady Gaga took the stage in Miami on August 31 for her Mayhem Ball tour and swapped out the words “summer boy” for “summer girl,” it wasn’t just a casual lyric change.
OutFAU, a vertical of OutSFL serving Florida Atlantic University, walked away with seven awards—including three first-place finishes—at the annual Sunshine State Awards ceremony, held Sept. 6 in Fort Lauderdale.
For a long time in my transition, I felt the need to perform. To be hyper masculine (masc), and to subscribe to this rough and tough image society portrays of cisgender (cis) men.
“Campus, not prison!”
That was the rallying cry across FAU’s Boca Raton campus on Friday, Sept. 5, as more than 100 students gathered to protest the university’s agreement with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

With Florida’s shifting political landscape and the rollback of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, LGBTQ+ college students are facing increasingly limited support, especially here on campus at FAU.
The controversy began on June 20, during a meeting of the FAU Boca Raton House of Representatives, when the body was considering the appointment of Olivia Catino as Associate Director of the Council of Student Organizations (COSO).
Maybe you were student government president in high school. Maybe you spent lunch crying in the bathroom. Maybe you were both (hi, me too).
