Turnout or Turn Back: How Young Voters Can Break the GOP’s Hold on Florida

Well, election season is here. Florida's Republican Governor, Ron DeSantis, has been working hard to keep Florida red.

He has appointed reactionary politicians to administrative positions in universities across Florida, who crack down on progressive student organizations and DEI. He has slapped voter registration organizations with tremendous fines for bureaucratic mistakes, to stop the youth from turning out to vote. He has even sent law enforcement officers to knock on the doors of people who signed a petition to put Amendment 4 on the ballot, an initiative to overturn the state's abortion ban. After all, he has to protect a supermajority in the state legislature that approves his extreme policies, expands his power, and stifles democracy and free speech.

He shouldn't count on keeping control. His voter suppression and intimidation can slow us down, but it can't stop us. If only young people voted as often as every other demographic in the state, Florida will turn blue this November. Early voting runs from October 21st to November 3rd, depending on your polling place. And of course, November 5th is election day.

This election cycle, FAU is in one of the only competitive districts for the state legislature. If you want to break the Republican supermajority in our state congress, your vote matters more than nearly anyone in this state! Not only that, but this November, Amendments 3 and 4 are on the ballot: these are initiatives that become state law if they pass the popular vote. Amendment 3 would legalize weed and Amendment 4 would overturn the state's extreme 6-week abortion ban. If college students voted as often as the average person, both are virtually certain to pass.

This is your chance! Organizations like the FAU College Democrats are here to make sure college students are informed, registered, and prepared to vote. We'll be raising awareness about the candidates and ballot initiatives. On Election Day, we're even partnering with the Night Owls to taxi students from the dorms to the polling station near the basketball arena!

Our campus can swing this election. Young voters like us need to be a part of that process.
