New year, more book bans.
Over 700 books were taken off shelves in Florida schools during the 2023-24 academic year, according to a list compiled by the state’s Department of Education (FLDOE).
This compares to the 400 removed for the 2022-23 school year.
The books were removed because an objection was raised by parents, students or residents of a Florida county, according to the FLDOE. These objections are permitted under Florida Statutes in Section 1006.28(2)(e), the department said.
Broward County saw five books removed, including “Lucky” by Alice Sebold and “The Handmaid’s Tale: Graphic Novel” by Margaret Atwood. No books were taken off shelves in Miami-Dade County.
