Over 700 books were removed from Florida schools during the 2023-24 academic year, a list compiled by the state’s Department of Education (FLDOE) shows.
This is more than the 400 taken off shelves for the 2022-23 school year.
Five books were removed in Broward County, including “Lucky” by Alice Sebold and “The Handmaid’s Tale: Graphic Novel” by Margaret Atwood. No books were affected in Miami-Dade County.
The books were removed because an objection was raised by parents, students or residents of a Florida county, according to the FLDOE. These objections are permitted under Florida Statutes in Section 1006.28(2)(e), the department said.
FLDOE didn’t return OutSFL’s request for comment at the time of publication.
The new rule allowing people to object to library books has been controversial in the state. Critics say many books being removed include LGBTQ or race-related themes and call it “censorship,” while FLDOE itself said “sexually explicit materials do not belong in schools.”
Other notable titles removed include “Forever” by Judy Blume, “The Color Purple” by Alice Walker, “Carrie” by Stephen King, “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover and “Milk and Honey” by Rupi Kaur.
