In a world where moments can be fleeting and connections all too fragile, Brett Jay Tannenbaum built something lasting — not just venues, not just memories, but safe spaces where people felt seen, celebrated, and free.
Brett, who passed away on July 30, 2025, at the age of 57, was more than an entrepreneur or visionary — he was a beloved builder of joy and belonging, within the LGBTQ community and way beyond. With an unwavering belief in the power of experience and human connection, he shaped the cultural heartbeat of Fort Lauderdale and beyond through creations that will live on: The Venue, The Manor, and Coliseum, among others.
Alongside his beloved spouse Roby Tannenbaum and dear friend Paul Hugo, Brett channeled his passion into turning nightlife and special events into something sacred — a shared celebration of identity, love, and authenticity. Together, the three didn’t just launch clubs or event spaces; they cultivated homes. These spaces weren’t merely places to gather. They became sanctuaries where generations of LGBTQ individuals and our mainstream community laughed, danced, healed, and celebrated their truest selves.
Brett’s life was grounded in a profound sense of purpose — to make people feel like they mattered. He believed in giving people not just a night out or a special celebration, but an experience that would stay with them for a lifetime. His impact extended well beyond the nightlife world. Through philanthropic endeavors, mentorship, and his deep commitment to Fort Lauderdale’s growth and inclusion, Brett uplifted artists, supported countless LGBTQ causes, and paved the way for others to shine. Brett shared his generosity, talent, and vice and the iconic “The Venue” with Brian and I for 14 versions of our annual event “Dancing With The South Florida Stars.”
His storytelling, business brilliance, and emotional depth formed a rare blend — one that allowed him to take risks, lead with heart, and build not just venues, but legacies. He never feared bold decisions. In fact, he chased them — not for acclaim, but for the chance to create magic for others.
In his personal life, Brett was fiercely devoted to his family and spouse Roby, to his dear friend and business partner Paul Hugo, and to a circle of friends and colleagues who became his chosen family. He was a man of humor, humility, and immense kindness.
In honoring Brett, we don’t just remember what he built. We remember why he built it: so that no one would ever feel like they didn’t belong, and so that joy — real, full-hearted joy — could be a part of every person’s journey.
Thank you, Brett, for giving the world more than memories. You gave us meaning.
