Logan Graves, a 32-year-old trans man, was a frequent Florida tourist. But he never expected to leave behind his life in Connecticut this year to live and volunteer with multiple Palm Beach organizations like Compass and PRISM.
“I gave up everything so I could give them everything, and I'm going to continue giving until there's nothing,” Graves said.
Graves first became involved with the community by getting invited to join Night Runners. From there, he met people who opened the door to other local opportunities. His motto? Say “yes” to everything. He said yes to do cleaning work for Compass, and eventually get trained to work the front desk. He said yes to giving a helping hand to the youth-led nonprofit PRISM, and he said yes to participating in community activism.
Although he left behind his family and low-rent apartment in rural Connecticut, Graves said he found something more fulfilling by moving to Florida: his purpose.
“I've never known [my Connecticut] community at all. In my area there is no ‘scene,’ it's a sleepy town and I have to travel an hour in the city to be involved in anything,” Graves said. “And then coming down [to Florida] and being connected with people and not having to hide who I am, I gained way more than I was expecting. I really gained a future.”
