In an emotional exchange on Sept. 14 at a town hall in Des Moines, Iowa, former Vice President and 2024 Republican presidential candidate Mike Pence doubled down on his opposition to allowing minors to access gender-affirming health interventions.
It feels like anti-LGBTQ sentiment has been rising in the U.S. recently, and new data from the Human Rights Campaign backs that up. The analysis focused highly on gender-affirming care restrictions and bans nationwide targeting queer youth and adults alike. Twenty twenty-three saw a massive spike in that kind of legislation, with more than 550 bills introduced in 43 states, and more than 80 signed into law, more than doubling last year which was already the worst on record.
A bipartisan measure to legalize the use of fentanyl test strips was signed into law on June 27, taking effect July 1. Previously, fentanyl test strips were considered “drug paraphernalia” and were therefore illegal to own. This is a major victory for advocates in the recovery arena.
