As Florida and the federal governments try to silence and hide people, it is imperative to shout out and show up. That is exactly how South Florida’s LGBTQ community is starting Black History Month.

They’re known as the gentle giants of the sea that make their way through South Florida’s waterways. Manatees are one of the region’s pride and joys, and spotting one can be an almost spiritual moment.

Wilton Manors felt like it was in at least four time zones Dec. 31, and when you shouted “Happy New Year!” depended on how long a bar’s satellite feed was delayed. Along Wilton Drive, cheers would rise up from one bar, followed 40 seconds later by cheers in a parking lot. Moments later, another bar started celebrating.
