Theater

Most large and medium cities have maybe one or two queer theaters. We are extremely lucky that Wilton Manors/Fort Lauderdale has four LGBTQ-centric companies producing regularly. Of course, there’s Island City Stage, Wilton Manors’ premier LGBT-focused theater company, now in its 12th season. Then there’s Ronnie Larsen’s Plays of Wilton at The Foundry, and Lesbian Thespians an itinerant performing arts group founded and led by women and dedicated to diversity and innovative art. While not LGBT-identified, Empire Stage is home to several companies producing LGBT-themed shows, including Larry Buzzeo’s ArtBuzz Theatrics.

It’s almost impossible to get two queens to agree to anything, so imagine how much work it is to get 125 of them to sing the same song at the same time. Yet, the Gay Men’s Chorus of South Florida (GMCSF), which, in reality, is the Gay Men’s Choruses, since GMCSF merged with the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus, all volunteered to put in hours of work and by doing so, they created a magical holiday cheer-filled evening with “Celebrate the Holidays” at Hard Rock Live on Dec. 13.

Hued Songs, a South Florida Black arts and culture organization renowned for creating experiences that amplify Black joy, creativity, and belonging, is set to make a vibrant debut in Broward County with its holiday function, “A Soulful Christmas.” The organization is well-known in Miami for its celebrated “Juneteenth Experience,” which encompasses spoken word to dance.

The Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s Theater & Arts Honors, announced this year’s recipients in a ceremony held at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center on Nov. 13. “More than 80 productions at nearly 30 different theatres were evaluated by a diverse group of more than 30 experienced judges representing Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties,” said Carbonell Board President Gary Schweikhart.

City Theatre, producer of the long-running and popular Summer Shorts festival of short plays, offers one full-length production in the Arsht Center’s Theater Up Close series: Carmen Rivera's “La Gringa,” Nov. 30 – Dec. 17, a poignant comedy about a young woman’s search for identity.

The Delray Beach Playhouse opens its season with “She Loves Me,” Nov. 24 – Dec. 10, Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick’s musical comedy about romance in a 1930s European perfumery, followed by “Ann Talman: Elizabeth Taylor and the Shadow of her Smile,” Dec. 11 – 14, a one-woman show exploring the actresses on- and off-stage triumphs and challenges.
