Based on a short story by Joe Hill (son of Stephen King), the 2021 horror flick “The Black Phone” relied more on suspense and jump scares than it did on gore and OTT special FX. The movie’s supernatural element was that the dead adolescent male victims of The Grabber (a masked Ethan Hawke) communicated with Finney (Mason Thames), the serial killer’s latest captive, via a non-functioning black telephone.
Fall is the season of cozy reading, and this November brings something truly special, and that’s three limited-edition releases celebrating YA books that shaped a decade.
“Blue Moon,” directed by Richard Linklater, takes viewers back to the evening of March 31, 1943, where we get a glimpse into the psyche of the tortured gay genius of the legendary lyricist, Lorenz Hart. The film screens on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 3:15 p.m. Later that evening, Ethan Hawke, who portrays Hart, will receive the Variety Virtuoso Award, and engage in a conversation about his extensive career.
