Latinos Salud continues to be one of South Florida’s most trusted and forward-thinking HIV-related organizations, and readers once again recognized the agency’s unwavering commitment to community care.
Executive Director Stephen Fallon, said the honor carries profound meaning during a challenging year.
“We are so honored that the community recognizes how we have stayed true to our principles in this year of tremendous turmoil,” he said. “We have had grants both terminated and sunsetted, but we have not withdrawn or scaled back a single service.”
Latinos Salud has expanded its clinical services each year. In addition to its long history of providing HIV testing, STD screenings, vaccinations, and PrEP, the agency’s providers now offer treatment for HIV, hypertension, hepatitis C, diabetes, and more.
Their locations are intentionally designed to feel welcoming – bright, spacious, and filled with Pride – offering a refreshing alternative to traditional clinic settings. While HIV prevention and case management remain at the core of the mission, Latinos Salud puts just as much emphasis on joy, connection, and culture. Community members regularly gather for movie nights, kayaking days, plays, bowling, and other free Health & Culture social events. The agency sponsors 100 of these events each year.
The organization also supports the next generation of LGBTQ leaders through its Pride Scholarships, nurturing future professionals who will work in health or social services. Perhaps most impressively, they focus on making care truly accessible: appointment scheduling is easy online or by phone, waits are minimal, and all four South Florida locations are open until 9 p.m. nightly, plus half-days on Saturdays.
Though the agency primarily markets to the underserved gay Latino community, its doors are open to everyone. Clients never need to be Latino to receive services, and all staff are bilingual. There are no co-pays, and each person who walks in is treated with respect, dignity, and compassion.
“More community members discover Latinos Salud through word-of-mouth than through any other means,” he said. “The Readers' Choice Award is like an entire community's word-of-mouth referral.”
Latinos Salud will celebrate its 17th Anniversary Gala on March 21 in the Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts – a fitting occasion for a nonprofit that continues to uplift, innovate, and lead.
