Visibility and vulnerability.

Those are the guiding principles of being out and proud for Erin Stover, Artistic Director of The Studios of Key West — a role she’s held since 2012.

“I strongly believe that the visible presence of queer community members inspires others to live their lives in full sun, rather than shadow,” she said. “I also feel that those of us who are privileged enough to make ourselves vulnerable, have an obligation to step up, take chances, raise our voices and speak up for those who are in more precarious positions.”

Under Stover’s leadership, The Studios has seen remarkable growth—expanding from a staff of four to over 30, tripling its operating budget, and increasing assets from $2 million to $16 million. The organization now works with over 1,000 artists and produces more than 150 unique programs annually.

As someone working in the arts, Stover believes deeply in the power of representation.

“[This] field has long served as a safe haven for members of the LGBTQIA community. As part of that tradition, I feel it's my responsibility to represent our community, and practice intentional visibility, in my daily life,” she said. “It's my goal to nurture those coming up in the world, and in this profession, the same way it nurtured me when I was starting my career.”

That pride, she says, is also personal — and joyful.

“I once read a quote — ok, a meme — that said, ‘if being gay was a choice, I'd be gayer.’ Funny, yes, but it also stuck with me as a great definition by pride,” she said. “I hope others can feel that their queer identity is something that makes them unique and opens them up to a fun and exciting life. I count myself as fortunate to be able to feel this way.”
