Legacy is more than a word to LaTonya Hopson. It is a vision, a mission, and an imperative. Not for herself, but for her community. She founded a nonprofit, The Legacy Project, with the goal of building bridges in BIPOC and LGBTQ communities as change agents through arts and culture to provide holistic care.
She came to South Florida during the pandemic after she had to close her personal training business. Eventually she got into parks and recreation management while she developed her dream.
“The experience from curating community engagements and volunteering with different grassroots gave me the confidence to start my own nonprofit,” she said.
In 2023, Hopson and her Legacy team produced their first Juneteenth event at the YMCA on Sistrunk. This year, they held a pair of events; one at the Miami Beach Botanical (the first for the city), and one at No Manors in Wilton Manors.
But the exciting thing about Hopson: she’s just getting started. Her youth, energy, and dedication seem boundless, and she will likely be feted on lists like this for years to come.
“We want to address social injustice and systemic oppression and uplift communities by focusing on the whole person through inclusionary resources and community health initiatives that will address the ailments that plague the human race holistically.”
