Jason R. Hughes is the executive director of ArtServe. For more than half of his life, he’s been at the cutting edge of LGBTQ art and media. Prior to living in South Florida, Hughes was the first director of marketing and sales for Pride Vision TV, now known as Out TV in Toronto.
“I'm very proud of my experience there,” he said.
Since 2020, Hughes has been the executive director of ArtServe, a role that he has embraced with unwavering dedication to the arts community. His efforts have been instrumental in supporting and uplifting artists, a testament to his commitment to broadening artists as entrepreneurs and business people.
“My goal is achieved,” Hughes said. “It was creating a safe space for everyone, whether you’re LGBTQ+, trans, Two-Spirited, man, or woman. It’s a safe space. That has always been my goal.”
Besides showcasing local artists in its gallery, ArtServe hosts vital meetings, workshops, and conferences and other events.
“Every day is a different day, and I’m so proud of what I get to do,” said Hughes.
He remains optimistic amid Gov. Ron DeSantis' recent veto of most state funding for arts programs. Hughes thinks the arts community in South Florida will survive as funding sources change.
“We are strong,” he explained. “When we all stick together, we get things done. I don't want anyone to be a victim.”
Hughes, who grew up in Canada and attended college in North Carolina, has been married to his husband, Ryan Springs, for 23 years.
