In “Fallen Fruit,” filmmaker Chris Molina presents a relatable story of starting over again.
“It’s about this guy who moves back home after a breakup and has to learn to love Miami again as an adult,” said Molina.
The script is one Molina has lived — returning to Miami, dating again, and trying to find where he fit in. Then along comes Hurricane Irma, and the storm turns into a blessing in disguise.
“It was one of those moments where I was able to lock in and find a new appreciation of where I was from,” said Molina.
“Fallen Fruit,” Molina’s feature film debut, won Best Feature at this year’s OutShine Film Festival. His previous short films, “Is That All There Is?” and “The Truth of A Thousand Nights,” earned him Best Film Director honors by the Miami New Times in 2022.
Molina cites the work of filmmaker Greg Araki as an influence on his career, with the current state of affairs in Florida as the perfect backdrop to create bold art.
“There are people who feel it is our duty to step up and be as ‘Queer As Fuck’ and take as much space as possible because people are trying to tell the world that we don’t exist,” he said.
