Given the date of this issue (7/11), I just couldn’t help but be inspired by the famous gas station/convenience store chain for a column.
And yes, I will admit after a couple or six Rose Kennedy’s, I’ve had the Uber driver drop me at the 7-11, a block from my house, and foraged through the aisles a little bleary-eyed. While I usually end up going home with some Taquito crumbs on my shirt, once or twice I have grabbed a slice of the pizza and you know what, I’ve had worse. Way worse, and paid a lot more for it, too. Now comes news that you can order an entire pizza from 7-11 online and by using the code Pizza* (they’re usually not dealing with rocket scientists, ya know), it’ll only cost you $5.99 to have it delivered to your door, ready to cook or hot and steamy (delivery guy not included - that’s a separate movie).
That got me thinking, what other deals can be had for less than $10, maybe of a little higher quality? So, I did a little digging and came up with these bargains.
What began as a $5 deal a decade ago is still quite a bargain today. Tap 42’s Prohibition burger, usually $18.50, is half-priced on Mondays from 4 to 11 p.m., and it comes with fries. The Prohibition is topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, aged white cheddar, applewood bacon, Dijonnaise, and secret sauce. There are 10 South Florida locations including 1411 S. Andrews Ave. in Fort Lauderdale, Tap42.com.
Dinner and a show, for 10 bucks? Hell yeah! At The Pub on the Drive on Mondays, the Angus burger comes with fries for $6, visit before 8 p.m. to take advantage $4 happy hour for well drinks. Now that doesn’t include tips for your server or the girls in the Stilettos classic drag show that’s later in the evening. 2283 Wilton Dr., thepubwm.com.
At Tucker Duke’s Lunchbox, The Tucker Duke, a half-pounder that’s normally $16.69, is half-off with a drink purchase on the first Tuesday of the month. It’s topped with house-made onion rings, American cheese, Tucker sauce (a Cajun-inspired remoulade), spring mix, and tomato on a toasted onion bun, and no substitutions are allowed. 1101 S, Powerline Rd., Deerfield Beach, tuckerdukesburgers.com.
At M.E.A.T. Eatery & Taproom, Wimpy Wednesday (named, after Popeye’s hamburger-eating friend, Wimpy) offers the restaurant’s “Nancy Pants” burger (5-ounce Angus ground chuck-brisket blend topped with American cheese, lettuce, and tomato), for $5. That and a soft drink and you come in just under the top of the bill. 401 Northwood Rd., West Palm Beach, meateatery.com.
Wilton Manor’s newest eatery, The Food Truck Store, sells its quarter-pound burger with American cheese for $5 all day on Mondays and Tuesdays. 1417 NE 26th St., thefoodtruckstore.com.
We seem to be getting a little burger-heavy here. How about something healthier near the beach? At St. Barts Coffee Co., just a block south of A1A and Las Olas Boulevard, delicious salads and sandwiches are almost all less than $10. 441 S Fort Lauderdale Beach Blvd., oceanviewdelight.com.
And, of course, how could we forget the dining deal of all dining deals, Alibi Monkey Bar, where they’ve got something for your empty purse and belly every day. Taco Tuesday brings you two mouthwatering tacos, rice, and beans for just $6.99. If you don’t feel like going south of the border (you prejudiced or something?), you can get a fried chicken sandwich and fries for six bucks. Mondays brings us back to burgers again, just $6 for a plain jane with fries.
