"Turkey Lurkey." Broadway fans will get the reference in the title, for the rest of you, search it on YouTube to see Baayork Lee and Donna McKechnie in the swinging 1960s show, “Promises, Promises,” before their roles in “A Chorus Line” made them stars. You can watch it while getting ready to head out to Thanksgiving dinner, heating up an already prepared meal, or basting the turkey you’re cooking yourself.

Picture it, Miami 2023! The Golden Girls Kitchen, a dining experience based on the popular television series, has opened as a pop-up restaurant in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood. The Golden Girls Kitchen whisks guests the moment they walk through the doors into the world of this endearing fan favorite. The experience jet sets fans back to the 1980s, transporting them into the world of their favorite golden girls. The restaurant, inspired by the iconic show, comes to Miami after experiencing massive success as a pop-up experience in Beverly Hills, New York City, San Francisco, and Chicago.

After decades as one of Fort Lauderdale's favorite restaurants, Canyon moved from its distinctive location on Sunrise Blvd. to a larger space on Federal, just south of the Kinney Tunnel. It still serves unique American artisanal cuisine with Asian, South and Central American undertones, in an intimate space with an upscale atmosphere. My husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a nice meal for our 29th wedding anniversary. Being off-season, it was easy to get a reservation, even on a Saturday night. We arrived right on time and were greeted with friendly smiles and wishes for a happy anniversary (the reservation form asks if it is a special occasion) and were promptly shown to the worst table in the restaurant (a tiny two-top against a post next to the kitchen and bus station). I asked for a better table, and we were seated near a window along the comfortable banquette.

Lois Soloman writes the Cheap Eats column for the Sun Sentinel’s website. She recently published a compendium of her picks for Broward County. Her criterion is an entrée for less than $20, which is about what you’d pay for a large meal at any fast-food restaurant nowadays. Post-COVID restaurant prices have risen significantly due to supply chain issues, higher wages for employees, and, as anyone who has been to the grocery store lately can attest, the higher cost of food.
