At the OutSFL Pageant, Camille Dior Love won the Marsha P Johnson Award, which was named for the trans activist and icon. “It was a privilege that my peers thought highly of me,” Love says. “I like the mission of volunteerism and philanthropy.”
Love now works as the Executive Director of Colornraw, the sister organization of the McKenzie Project. It’s a trans-led company that works to educate, empower, and create a safe space for the black TLGBQ+ community.
“I was always a community leader,” says Love. “I am a trans activist. I was always at the front line of HIV and STI prevention in my previous work. I naturally have a big voice, and I just felt like I could yell a little louder and people will pay more attention if I'm at this level.”
Love also works to spread an increased sense of pride. “Take pride in who we are every day, not just in June,” she says. “Not just in March on Transgender Visibility Day, and especially not in November, on Trans Day of Remembrance, when everybody wants to hug us. They should see us all 12 months of the year, every day.”
