The emergence of gay leather as a coherent subculture can be traced back to the second half of the 1940s and the 1950s in major cities of the U.S. Later, it also developed in other urban centers in most industrialized capitalist countries. While gay leather developed 20 years after heterosexual European and American fetish styles, it did so relatively isolated from those existing circles and organizations.
