Many things have happened in the past month.
If you’re looking to catch up on major headlines and local news, you can always visit outsfl.com. Meanwhile, OutFAU has tackled some tough topics this month, especially the rising tide of anti-trans and anti-queer legislation. These bills and executive orders hurt our community, affect society as a whole, and remind us how important it is to stand up for equality.
Of course, with February comes both the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day — two occasions many people look forward to. But while everyone else is debating football stats or picking out heart-shaped candy, it’s important to remember that the LGBTQ+ community is still facing attacks on our rights and identities. In the midst of all this, let’s never forget the simple truth: Love is love, in all its wonderful forms — whether between a man and a woman, two men, two women, or two people quietly finding comfort in each other away from prying eyes.
If you’re spending this Valentine’s Day on your own, keep in mind it’s just another society-hyped holiday. In fact, Valentine’s Day has ancient roots in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was quite a dramatic affair filled with ritual sacrifice and random matchmaking — designed to ward off infertility and evil spirits. Over time, the festival evolved, becoming Valentine’s Day in honor of the Christian martyr and Saint Valentine, and eventually into exchanging cards and candy. Traditions change, and so can we; if you’re not up for the roses and teddy bears or you don’t have a valentine this year, don’t worry — it’s more than okay to pass on the pressure.
February also marks Black History Month, a time to acknowledge the injustices Black people have faced throughout history and honor the activists who fought and continue to fight for change. Take the opportunity to learn more and share what you discover. I encourage you to check out PRISM’s annual Black History Month campaign by following @prism.fl on Instagram to stay informed and inspired.
I wish you all a meaningful and reflective February, whether you’re cheering for your favorite football team, celebrating love (in all its vibrant forms), or taking time to learn about black history. Stay strong, stay proud, and remember that no act, even from our government, can or will erase us.
