Stephen Kitsakos found his artistic home in Key West at The Studios of Key West, which he noted is the largest interdisciplinary arts organization in the Florida Keys.
He currently serves as the Chair of the Artistic Advisory Council. He’s owned a home on the island since 2002. He’s been with his husband for 43 years.
He’s known for his work as a theater director and opera librettist.
Some of his recent works include an adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s “A Thousand Splendid Suns” for Seattle Opera, which was nominated for Best New Opera 2023 at the International Opera Awards. Other works include “The White Rooster” at the Smithsonian and "Single Occupancies" for Opera America.
“I am currently working with Martin Hennessy on Swimming in the Dark, Tomasz Jedrowki's stunning work of LGBTQ fiction,” he said. He’s working on this piece in partnership with the Jacobs School of Music, Ballet & Opera Theater at Indiana University.
Kitsakos has mentored many LGBTQ writers and believes that’s “a way for me to serve the wider arts and culture community.”
Outside his professional life, he enjoys cycling, and spending time with his family. He also stays connected with former students from his time as a Theatre Arts professor at SUNY New Paltz.
