She’s not just the talent, she’s the boss, and Ms. Halliwell doesn’t wait for an opportunity to come to her. “I'm not going to sit around and wait for anybody to throw me a bone! You know, a lot of people just sit and wait for work. I will create it.”
For Halliwell and her production company, Drag Events Unlimited, the best opportunities are the ones she makes happen for herself and other drag performers, like her recent sold-out Golden Girls Tribute Show.
Halliwell’s plan for success is simple: to change the dynamic for the drag community in general, not only by producing and financing her own shows, but advocating for better working conditions and compensation for her and her fellow performers.
A stage veteran for 20 years, she sees her productions as “a chance to give these entertainers way more money than they'd be making in a club. I'm putting it on in front of an audience that wants to show appreciation for what they're seeing.”
“I’m taking [performers] away from the nightclub, where locals ignore them, staring at their phones, their backs to the stage. And I put them in front of an audience … who are focused on them and appreciate everything that they do. It's a different vibe for them.
