In tough times, tough people rise to meet the occasion. That was the case for Karen Kelley. “I decided rather than screaming at the TV, I'd get involved.”
That was her reaction to the 2016 election. She dove into the community and is making her presence felt. Kelley is the Board Chair of Stonewall Museum Archives and Library, preserving LGBTQ history for the next generation.
“I thought that would be a great place to get involved in our community. It’s so important right now.”
Kelley is a South Florida native from Davie and a longtime realtor. She’s been married to her wife, Mikol Kelley, for 28 years, and they live in Oakland Park. All this is to say she knows the community from the street level up.
It’s that insight that lets her know where the community needs help. Bringing impactful events to Stonewall, such as the exhibit recreating the inside of the Stonewall Inn and the riot, as well as bringing in one of the rioters from 1969, keeps history relevant.
Her future goals are even more ambitious. “I want us to continue to succeed in sharing our community and protecting those that don’t have a voice. I want to expand my energies to other LGBTQ organizations in Broward County, especially for women.”
