Avion Goordeen serves as the Outreach Director at PRISM, a nonprofit focused on education and sexual health resources for LGBTQ+ youth in South Florida. He’s a first-generation immigrant, identifies as bisexual, and has been involved with nonprofits since 2018.
He started with volunteering at Compass LGBTQ+ Community Center, which he is still involved with.
“Since 2018 I have not left the community,” Goordeen said. “I've been out and about at different Pride events, supporting where I can because when I first entered the center, it made me feel so welcomed, and I wanted to create that environment for others.”
He is currently training for The Joy Ride, previously known as The SMART Ride.
“I got into a big fitness kick around the same time that I got into Compass, in which I ended up as a board director for Night Runners,” Goordeen said. “So I like to go running out and about. Haven't been running as much, but I have been cycling a lot, and around the same time I got involved with The Smart Ride, so that was always a fun thing for me. In fact, this month, I'm starting to ride again, at least around Boynton Beach for training for November for the new Joy Ride.”
He received his undergraduate degree from the California Institute of Technology and his master’s in ocean engineering from Florida Atlantic University. He enjoys being in and around the ocean and educating people about aquariums and marine life.
