There was a time, not so long ago, that Florida was the swingiest of swing states. From the “hanging chads” disaster of 2000 which handed the White House to George W. Bush to razor-thin races for governor and senate through 2018 all barely tipping Republican.

With fewer than nine weeks until the general election, a key group is ramping up and doubling up its get out the vote (GOTV) efforts.

Controversial Florida Rep. Fabián Basabe won his party’s primary election last week and now faces, arguably, the toughest opponent of his young political career.

Call it “Don’t Search Gay.” Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has removed the “LGBTQ Travel” section from the state’s website. Until recently, visitflorida.com, the state’s marketing website, featured a landing page for LGBTQ travel resources and business promotion.

In a scene more reminiscent of a country where censorship and repression thrive, hundreds of books — many with LGBTQ themes and religious studies — were reportedly seen being transported to a landfill. The scene was captured on film and went viral, the Sarasota Herald Tribune first reported.
