With fewer than nine weeks until the general election, a key group is ramping up and doubling up its get out the vote (GOTV) efforts.
The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus is opening two GOTV centers in Florida: one in Wilton Manors, the other in Tampa.
The one in Wilton Manors will be inside Tropics Bar & Grille and is expected to open on Friday, Sept. 13.
It may sound like an out-of-the-box choice, but Bobby Blair, Tropics’ Executive Business Manager, said it's important to utilize all available resources.
“This election cycle very likely may be the most consequential election of our lifetime. It is critical that we get out to vote and show that the people running for office align with our LGBTQ principles and core values, and to ensure that these candidates are time tested friends for equalities and freedoms that serve all Americans from all walks of life. Tropic takes very seriously the importance of getting out to vote and ensuring that our potential candidates are elected to best serve our communities and our allies.”
The caucus usually has a GOTV center in Wilton. This year, they are branching out to another vote-rich area: Tampa. It’s called Casa Harris at 6800 N. Dale Mabry, and is already up and running.
“We are going to do whatever it takes to flip Florida,” Caucus President Kristen Browde said. “Our community votes disproportionately. We vote more than other communities because we know how vital it is to protect the gains of the Obama years from the nonstop attacks of the Trump and DeSantis years.”
Both sites will be open every day through the election, focusing on registration, phone banking, canvassing, selling merchandise, and more. They will also be hubs for candidates to hold events.
