Elton John won his first Emmy on Jan. 15, joining a select group of artists who have won all four major entertainment awards – a Grammy, an Oscar, a Tony and an Emmy – popularly known as the EGOT.
President Joe Biden celebrated John on X (formerly Twitter).
“Sir Elton John has been a tidal wave throughout his career to help people rise up and make hope and history rhyme,” Biden posted.
The Emmys celebrated 75 years. John did not accept the award in person. The ceremony usually takes place in the fall, but because of multiple strikes happening, it was delayed till this week.
John won his Emmy for the “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.” His other awards include five Grammys, two Oscars and one Tony. There are now 19 entertainers who have secured an EGOT including Audrey Hepburn, Whoopi Goldberg, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jennifer Hudson.
“Honoured to have joined the hallowed ranks of EGOT winners, here’s to the joy of music and the magic [it] brings to our lives,” John, 76, posted on Instagram.
John Gielgud, an English actor and theater director, was the first gay person to secure the EGOT in 1991.
John came out as bisexual in 1976 in an interview with The Rolling Stones. Later in 1992 he came out as gay in the same magazine. In 2014, he married his current husband, David Furnish.
