There is something about fall that makes me want to disappear into a fantasy world filled with magic, romance and just enough danger to make turning the pages irresistible.

Two upcoming releases have already caught my attention, and both offer very different reasons to make a little more room on that increasingly crowded TBR.

The Court of Venus by Bel Banta: September 29

Court intrigue, astrology and enemies-to-lovers romance? Yes, please.

Bel Banta’s debut The Court of Venus takes readers into a fantasy world inspired by the court of Henry VIII, where magic is connected to the astrological sign under which a person is born. Rare Moonborn magician Bianca Mortlake is summoned back to court for a competition, forcing her to confront an old rival while becoming caught in political maneuvering surrounding the throne.

The horoscope-inspired magic system immediately makes this one stand out, but add a dangerous royal court, ambition, secrets and romantic tension, and it sounds like exactly the kind of fall romantasy that could keep me reading far later than planned.

Banta also comes to publishing as a longtime indie bookseller, which makes her move from recommending stories to creating one of her own especially fun.

Fall for a Fairytale by Isabelle Taylor: November 10

If your preferred fantasy comes with more whimsy, adventure and romance, Fall for a Fairytale sounds downright adorable.

The story follows Jayce, an orc con artist who convinces orphaned fae barmaid Clove that she may actually be a kingdom’s missing princess. Clove isn't exactly convinced, and she knows Jayce probably has an angle, but she joins him anyway. 

What follows includes flying pirates, bandits, found family, romance and, perhaps most importantly, an adorable baby hootbear.

Described as a mashup of Anastasia and Treasure Planet, this one sounds like pure escapist fun with enough spice and adventure to keep its fairy-tale sweetness from becoming too sugary.

For nights when readers want dangerous courts and delicious tension, and another one for when they want to curl up with something magical and romantic, these books promise action, adventure and so much more. Happy Reading!
