SunServe’s focus on mental health manifests itself in many ways. They help people address addiction issues, housing and food insecurities, trans care obstacles and more. Each one takes money. Lots of money. The reach of their programs is greatly dependent on the next two months.
“Our goal is to raise $400,000,” SunServe CEO Tony Lima said during a fundraiser.
That number is not what it seems. It could be twice that. SunServe, as well as several other South Florida organizations, is a beneficiary of next month’s AHF AIDS Walk & Music Festival. SunServe will get a dollar-for-dollar match.
They are also set to hold their annual Shine Gala on March 28, and that event’s proceeds will also count towards their AIDS Walk total.
The organization helps about 5,000 people per year and focuses on the most marginalized in our community.
“The idea is not only to expand our services but also to fill in any of the gaps that some grants leave behind so that way, when people come to us for services we don’t ever have to turn anyone away.”
Lima’s dedication was on display in January when he celebrated his birthday. Dozens packed into Salvo Osteria Romana which hosted a special Sunday brunch in which the proceeds went to the organization’s AIDS Walk total.
When asked why he gave his birthday to the cause, he responded without pause.
“SunServe is my heart. It’s my reason.”
