Metal detectors sounded the alarm. Security and law enforcement leaped into action. Potential tragedy was averted. In other words: the plan worked. When Michael Monheit allegedly ran through a gate during Stonewall Pride with a gun, he was quickly apprehended.
WMPD Chief Gary Blocker debriefed city commissioners and citizens saying, “Due to enhanced security systems and the preparedness and collaboration of security and law enforcement, Monheit was quickly contacted and detained, restoring order to our Stonewall festival.”
The arrest is notable because he was stopped thanks to metal detectors, which were being used at Stonewall for the first time.
“All evidence and testimony uncovered in our investigation support the conclusion that the metal detectors did activate and did work as intended,” Blocker continued.
Before the festival, many questioned if the extra security was worth the additional $30,000. Now people are singing its praises.
On his social media, Commissioner Don D’Arminio called it “money well spent.”
Commissioner Paul Rolli said, “Fortunately, all the security systems in place were working as intended — metal detectors and communication devices between hired security and police.”
People all over social media also raved over the security efficacy.
Terry Hardacre wrote, “Thank God he was stopped! Bless all of you who protect this precious community!”
“Thank you, Wilton Manors city council. Its sponsorship of security saved lives,” Erik Lobato commented. “The volunteers, security team and police should be recognized for identifying this person and taking action so quickly.”
Rolli summed it up best, writing, “We thank everyone involved for keeping us all safe.”
Monheit is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and trespassing. He pleaded not guilty and is out on $2,000 bond and ordered to undergo a mental health exam.
