Thanksgiving: giving thanks, giving time, giving gratitude. From elementary students to septuagenarians, hundreds of volunteers showed up to pack boxes of food and load them into trunks for a grocery giveaway the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
It’s the 10th year for the drive-thru food giveaway, organized by Broward County Property Appraiser Marty Kier and his team.
“Broward County is the greatest place on the face of the earth. But we have thousands and thousands and thousands of people who are food insecure every single day. What I love about this event is it helps every single person who comes through here.”
According to Broward.org, 250,000 people, including 79,000 children, have food insecurity. This event helps alleviate the strain at the start of the holiday season. A huge tent served as a staging area for 50,000 pounds of vegetables and other holiday fixins while a truck stood by with 13,000 pounds of turkeys.
The tent was set up on the grand front lawn of the Sanctuary Church at 1400 N. Federal Hwy. Inside was a team working with assembly line precision. Their efforts were appreciated. Hundreds of cars started lining up before dawn and eventually stretched back beyond 13th St. All were served.
“This is a year where so many people are finding affordability is such a difficult goal,” Mayor Dean Trantalis said. “The city of Fort Lauderdale is so proud to host this.”
After wending their way up Federal and around the church, drivers popped their trunks and were greeted at four different stations, each with its own set of supplies for a great holiday feast. Volunteers eventually closed the trunks and people drove off, grateful for kindness while volunteers were grateful for the opportunity to serve.
