When it comes to developing and maintaining good mental health, there is no one-size-fits-all treatment. Many people avoid seeking help because of perceived stigma, expense, and language barriers.

SunServe is bringing a new program to South Florida to reach new patients where they are. Free2Be was developed internationally, primarily in Latin America, and landed here as a partnership between AHF and Impulse Group

“We know that in communities of color, there’s a lot of machismo that exists. There’s a lot of ‘no, I don’t need mental health support, that’s for people who are weak.’ That’s what we’re battling,” SunServe CEO Tony Lima said.

The primary focus is getting mental health care for men of color. The groups will be held in multiple languages including Spanish and Creole. Cultural competency is often considered a luxury when organizations try to help as many people as they can all at once. Inevitably some get lost, fall through the cracks, or don’t feel welcome.

Lima says Free2Be is different. “We want people to know there is a space for them. They can come and get services at SunServe. We have a specialized set of groups that are focused on providing help to men, LGBTQ or not.”

The journey is often long, but Lima says it’s worth it. “Free to be yourself, ultimately. Free to be who you are. Free to be who you want to be. It’s a starting point to get there.”
