Florida lawmakers passed legislation that would limit the ability of local governments to fund or promote diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.
HB 1001 and its Senate companion, SB 1134, would prohibit counties and municipalities from providing or authorizing funds to support DEI-related programs or activities. The bills also restrict local governments from taking official actions related to DEI and from maintaining DEI offices or staff.
The legislation has raised questions among local officials about how broadly it could apply and which events or programs might be affected. Some observers say the language could impact government support for cultural and community events, including Pride celebrations and heritage observances.
It is also unclear how the prohibition on providing or authorizing funds would apply to municipal services connected to public events, such as police or security support.
Wilton Manors Vice Mayor Chris Caputo has raised concerns about the potential impact on local events. In a social media post, he wrote, “Because our signature events like Stonewall Pride, Wicked Manors, the things we do for Black History Month, even the new Pride bike racks … are events that drive tourism and are critical public safety like police at Stonewall.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis is expected to sign the bill when it reaches his desk.
