Fort Lauderdale’s skyline is quickly changing, but the main man in city hall is staying the same.
Dean Trantalis, who is gay, was reelected as Mayor. In a relatively close race, he won a four-way race with 38% of the vote. His closest competitor, Barbra Anne Stern, finished with 33%.
During his time in office, Trantalis has prioritized development and the number of cranes dotting the skyline offers proof. That has translated into tax savings for residents.
The current city budget is the 18th in a row where the city’s property tax rate stayed the same. The influx of new residents moving to the city and living in high value property has expanded the tax base while keeping rates stagnant.
Trantalis is Fort Lauderdale’s first out mayor. The city commission will have commissioner Steve Glassman, who is gay, and LGBTQ ally Ben Sorensen.
The three could create bloc of votes that make sure LGBTQ issues are addressed in a fair manner.
