At a time when school yard bullies are empowered by elected bullies, a new school is stepping up. The Acceptance Academy is taking applications for its inaugural class. The school, located in Boca Raton, will serve and educate students in grades six through eight.
“Students at The Acceptance Academy Community School (AACS) will receive a solid education in a safe and inviting environment that focuses on the quality of their work and the development of their character,” said Stephen Gaskill, co-founder and president of The Acceptance Academy.
Middle school is already a tough time. Being out in middle school can be soul crushing. AACS intends to provide a bully-free environment that lets students be who they are. The school cites a study that shows two-in-three LGBTQ+ students feel unsafe because of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression and 53% are discriminated against.
This project has long been a dream of Gaskill, who has spent years bringing the school to reality.
While it may sound obvious, it’s important to point out that kids who feel safe at school have higher achievement. AACS will be a bridge between elementary and high school for LGBTQ youth.
“Students achieve when they are supported by each other as well as by the adults in their lives,” principal Mindy Koch said. “In the classroom they will learn skills like critical thinking, problem-solving, and practical application. They will have the ability to deal with real-world challenges.”
The Academy will have small classes and Gaskill says tuition will be about half that of other private and charter schools. You can learn more and apply by visiting AcceptanceSchool.org.
