Activist Todd Delmay Taking Over SAVE

The shockwaves that went through South Florida’s activist community over the weekend are still being felt. Todd Delmay is becoming executive director at SAVE, the political organization that represents the interests of LGBTQ in Florida.

“SAVE is one of those indispensable assets that belongs to the whole community,” Delmay said. “It felt like a really good fit.”

He takes over from Orlando Gonzales, who’s been very involved in the search for his replacement.

”I’m excited about Todd Delmay. He is someone who brings to the table passion for the LGBTQ movement. He is a unifier, and if there’s anything we need at this moment is someone who can work with the community.”

SAVE was once solely associated with Miami-Dade County, and, in many minds, still is. Delmay says it's time to export the advocacy.

“What SAVE does is needed in Broward too. People will be able to see the benefit of that.”

Delmay comes to SAVE after about nine months as executive director of The SMART Ride. Sources close to the ride say he believed he could do both, but given the time commitments involved, they looked for other options. After weeks of deliberation, they chose to shutter the organization after this year’s ride.

Last year, Delmay ran as a Democrat for a seat in the legislature and lost in the primary. He is vocal about his desire to run again, something Gonzales says SAVE will deal with when the time comes.

“A possible run is a process we’ll go through when the time comes for him to make that decision. We will engage him and speak with him about what it’s like to do both at the same time.”

Delmay has long been a community activist, and this job will affect many of those organizations. He is resigning as president of the Dolphin Democrats as well as from SMART Ride. He will finish his term on The Hollywood LGBTQ Council as well as heading up January’s My Hollywood Pride.
