The word "spa" most likely originates from the Belgian town of Spa, known for its mineral-rich springs and healing waters. While some believe it's an acronym for the Latin phrase "Salus per Aquam" (health through water), this is likely a backronym, and the town's name predates the widespread use of acronyms.
Today, "spa" refers to places offering health and beauty treatments, often incorporating water therapies like baths and massages. It includes services like body wrap, body scrub, mud mask, dry brushing plus other wellness services, and it is used globally.
