Last week, Palm Beach County schools modified their new policy to allow for books prohibited by the “Don’t Say Gay” laws to be held in school libraries. This comes after State Attorney General Ashley Moody, a Republican, shared in August that the “Don’t Say Gay” laws do not apply to books in school libraries. Moody stated that the bills specifically refer to classroom instruction and therefore do not apply to library content.
Diana Goetsch, author of her memoir, “This Body I Wore,” will appear at South Florida Libraries next week as part of her “Red State Library Tour.” This tour brings her to communities that are being targeted by book bans and challenges to bring people to the libraries to read. Goetsch is primarily a poet who has released eight poetry collections. However, her memoir released in 2022 about her experience with her own body as a trans woman has received critical acclaim.
In yet another stinging loss in Florida’s culture wars, LGBTQ History Month will not be recognized in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
The City of Lake Worth Beach unanimously approved a resolution naming itself an LGBTQ Sanctuary City, making it the first city in Florida to do so. The resolution promises that the city will now and forever be considered a safe place, a sanctuary, and a welcoming city for LGBTQ individuals and their families to live in peace and comfort.
