Why Masters of the Universe Was the Kind of Fun I Actually Needed | Opinion

On June 1, I went to see Masters of the Universe with my husband Sebastian and one of my closest friends since college, Justin, and somewhere between the action, soundtrack, ridiculous fun, and nonstop commentary between the three of us, I realized something: I had forgotten how good it feels to simply have fun.

And honestly? I needed that.

Movies are always better when shared with people who matter to you, and this one felt especially meaningful. Justin has known me since college, which means he has witnessed many versions of Aurora, such as stressed student Aurora, ambitious Aurora, overthinking Aurora, and the version of me who absolutely will quietly mention moments of my commentary during a movie. Sebastian, meanwhile, has been beside me through life’s biggest highs and hardest moments, so spending a night laughing with both already felt like a win before the previews even started.

But the movie itself genuinely surprised me.

Without giving too much away, Masters of the Universe leans into exactly what people probably want from a story like this: adventure, humor, fantasy, spectacle, and larger-than-life stakes. The plot moves quickly, throwing familiar heroes and villains into battles, betrayals, emotional moments, and impossible choices while still remembering to have fun. At its core, the story explores loyalty, courage, friendship, identity, and protecting something bigger than yourself, themes that somehow still hit no matter your age. Yes, it is dramatic. Yes, there are moments where you just must go with it.

What worked most for me, though, were the characters and performances. The actors commit to this world instead of holding back, and that matters. Some performances lean into humor, others into emotion, tension, and vulnerability, but together they make these familiar characters feel entertaining and worth revisiting. Watching heroes and villains interact reminded me why fantasy stories connected with so many of us growing up: they let us root for bravery, friendship, hope, and the possibility that good can still win.

And yes, the soundtrack absolutely got me.

Music has a funny way of pulling memories out of nowhere. There were moments that instantly reminded me of being younger and feeling genuinely excited by storytelling, when heroes felt heroic, villains were dramatic in the best way, and worlds like this felt huge and imaginative. At one point, I caught myself smiling because the emotional connection to these characters had clearly never gone away.

Lately, life has felt heavy. Big transitions. Grief. Career changes. Anxiety. Trying to figure out what comes next while still showing up every day.

But for a couple of hours, none of that mattered.

I laughed with Justin, sat beside Sebastian, escaped into a story, and remembered something simple: joy matters.

Sometimes movies do not have to change your life.

Sometimes they just remind you that fun still exists, and honestly, that is enough.
