Don D’Arminio won the best politician on the Wilton Manors City Commission. D’Arminio is serving his first term on the commission.
“I always advocate for the residents and what’s best for the city,” said D’Arminio.
Before his election in 2022, D’Arminio served in a volunteer capacity for six years on the city’s Planning & Zoning Board.
“That experience really gave me a great foundation,” he said.
The current commission, composed of four gay men and a straight mayor, operates effectively as a cohesive group, D’Arminio said.
“We all respect each other’s opinions,” he said.
Readers also voted D’Arminio as best new activist. That activism has a broader scope than his work for the city, D’Arminio said.
Together with his husband of 27 years, Marc Martorana, the couple open their home to host fundraising events for nonprofits and community organizations. The list includes the South Florida Symphony, Pet Project, Island City Stage, Stonewall Archives and National LGBTQ Task Force.
“It is important to continue to fight for rights in our community, especially in Florida where a lot of those rights are currently being challenged,” D’Arminio said.
