Queer Keys has big goals for its future, which includes a brick and mortar LGBTQ community center in Key West.
The center, according to Chris McNulty, will “serve as a gathering space and to expand our programs and services for our community. We are quickly closing in on that dream and fully expect to have a space of our own in 2024.”
Those are big dreams for an organization just a couple of years old. But McNulty is determined to make it come true.
“Winning Best Nonprofit Key West from the readers of OutSFL is an incredible honor, particularly because we are still such a young, growing organization,” he said.
Queer Keys was created “to support, educate, empower, and celebrate the queer community in the Florida Keys.”
Since 2021, they’ve run a weekly community-building LGBTQ youth program. Other programs include a bi-monthly gender-expansive support group, an online parents and caregivers network, and a Trans Trust Fund to provide case management and financial support for gender-affirming care.
“We are very proud of the work we’ve accomplished in such a short time, and we remain committed to sustainably growing our organization to provide much needed support to members of our community in the Florida Keys - a region of Florida that is severely lacking LGBTQIA+ focused programs and services,” McNulty said.
Beyond programs the organization has also held events like the Rally for Our Rights to bring awareness of the anti-LGBTQ legislation in Florida, an annual Coming Out Party showcasing local LGBTQ talent and other educational events.
