In a time when some cities and towns eagerly comply with anti-LGBTQ directives that eschew diversity and embrace homogeny, Wilton Manors leadership is standing tall. The city commission meeting from Oct. 14 provides three examples.
They began by issuing a proclamation declaring October as LGBTQ+ History Month — a procedure that’s usually routine and uncontroversial, but with the state government now erasing rainbow crosswalks, it’s taken on a much braver tone.
The proclamation reads, “The City of Wilton Manors has ... its own long and abundant LGBTQ+ history, which includes the adoption of non-discrimination policies, co-hosting the annual Stonewall Pride Parade and Festival during National LGBTQ+ Pride Month, becoming Florida’s first (and one of the nation’s first cities) to permanently fly the LGBTQ+ Pride Flag, and consistently support our LGBTQ+ families and LGBTQ+ friendly businesses.”
Also at the meeting, they officially approved the city’s $45,000 sponsorship of next weekend’s Wicked Manors, the annual Halloween party that is produced by The Pride Center.
It’s worth noting the donation comes after the commission passed a property tax cut.
Finally, they declared the creation of Wilton Manors Art Week. It will run Nov. 6-9 with exhibits and parties throughout the city. The city has long talked about upping the area’s art game, with the goal of making us an art destination.
At a time when governments are retracting from culture, Wilton Manors is doubling down on its commitment to the community.
