On our unexpected and appreciated anniversary trip to Nassau, my husband and I found ourselves with more than just a place to stay.
We were in Nassau, staying at the newly transformed British Colonial Hotel, a place that I was lucky enough to have been invited to experience for my passion which is writing features, especially travel pieces.
The experience that we got was both special and unique, one that definitely added to our celebration of being married for 17 years.
From the moment we stepped into the jewel-toned lobby with its rich mahogany accents and intricate tilework, it felt like we had entered a space that honored its storied past while embracing a vibrant new chapter.
Just like many of us do when we celebrate something that represents so much growth, like an anniversary or another special celebration to remember.
What makes the hotel extraordinary is its ability to be both a grand dame and a modern escape. The amenities and offerings, everything from the rooms to the dining options, makes it a place where those who visit can find themselves trying out something new throughout the length of their stay. From long walks on the 300-foot private white-sand beach and refreshing dips in the pools, Sebastian and I really enjoyed disconnecting at the resort and trying out as much as we could during our time there, such as the resort’s restaurant and bars.
The rooms are cozy and inviting, and perfect for resting after a long day spent exploring.
Whether gazing out at the harbor or cozying up in the cabanas, each moment felt like a celebration of slowing down and reconnecting. And the dining was just as memorable.
At the Mahogany Club, traditional Bahamian flavors like snapper and peas soup were reimagined with modern flair, creating plates that were both soulful and elevated. Sakana Noodle & Sushi Bar was our pick for a more intimate evening, where fresh sushi and warm sake lingered as much as the conversation. And of course, no visit was complete without cocktails at Woodes Rogers Tavern, where live jazz, a flickering firepit, and inventive island drinks made every toast feel magical.
Beyond the hotel, we wandered into Nassau’s colorful world of shopping. Just steps away, the Straw Market overflowed with handcrafted treasures, woven bags, and island keepsakes, while duty-free shops and boutiques tempted us with everything from jewelry to vibrant resort wear. It was the perfect blend of indulgence and exploration.
The British Colonial isn’t just a hotel, it’s an escape that celebrates history, design, and culture while creating space for personal milestones.
For us, it was the perfect anniversary backdrop, filled with moments we’ll carry long after we left the island, in a place where you can spend days enjoying the resort’s amenities, as well as stepping outside to take in everything that Nassau has to offer visitors. It’s a place where history, romance, and modern indulgence meet on the Bahamian waterfront, and those who decide to visit might call their time spent there unforgettable.
