The Carbonell Awards, South Florida’s Theater & Arts Honors, announced this year’s recipients in a ceremony held at the Lauderhill Performing Arts Center on Nov. 13. “More than 80 productions at nearly 30 different theatres were evaluated by a diverse group of more than 30 experienced judges representing Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties,” said Carbonell Board President Gary Schweikhart.
GableStage in Coral Gables was the biggest winner, picking up seven different Carbonell Awards, including Outstanding Production, Direction, Play, Sound, and Costume Design for “Native Gardens.” The play also garnered Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead Male Role, for David Kwiat, and Lead Female Role for Diana Garle. GableStage also won technical awards for lighting for “El Huracán.”
Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” won Outstanding Musical, Choreography, Music Direction, and Outstanding Performance by an Actor for Scott Cote. Ashley McManus won Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Female Role for Maltz’s production of “Sweet Charity.”
Zoetic Stage in Miami garnered four major awards, including Outstanding New Work, Play or Musical for Michael McKeever’s “American Rhapsody,” while his husband, Stuart Meltzer, took home the award for Outstanding Direction of a Musical for Zoetic’s production of “Next to Normal,” which also on an award for Jeni Hacker for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead Female Role in a musical.
Ronnie Larsen Presents in Wilton Manors picked up an award for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Male Role in a play for Chris Anthony Ferrer in “Red Speedo.”
