It was another whirlwind week in the Trump administration. Where do we begin?
The president proposed taking ownership of the war torn Gaza Strip, ordered the Treasury Department to stop minting pennies, proclaimed Feb. 9 as Gulf of America Day and declared himself chairman of the board at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Trump’s takeover of the Kennedy Center is pure retribution. In 2017, he was snubbed by some of the honorees who criticized his response to the deadly white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Va.
To prevent a boycott, Trump skipped the gala that year and stayed away from the ceremonies during his entire first term.
On Feb. 10, Trump announced Ric Grenell, a gay man and former acting director of national intelligence, would be installed as the center’s interim director.
“Ric shares my Vision for a GOLDEN AGE of American Arts & Culture,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
In targeting the Kennedy Center, the president used a popular conservative scapegoat — drag shows.
“No more drag shows or other anti-American propaganda — only the best. Ric, welcome to show business!” Trump wrote.
Grenell, who had recently overseen repatriation flights to Venezuela, did not immediately comment on his new assignment.
Along with Grenell’s appointment, Trump fired 13 board members installed by former president Joe Biden, including Karine Jean-Pierre, Biden’s press secretary.
