Supercon, the annual pop culture convention that celebrates comic books, animation, cartoons, anime, video games, cosplay, fantasy and more opens Friday and runs through July 14 at the Miami Beach Convention Center.
Here’s a rundown of the notable guests at Supercon 2024 and other tidbits you might be interested in.
Starting off there is David Tennant, who is arguably the most recognized face in sci-fi (“Doctor Who,” “Broadchurch,” “Good Omens,” “Jessica Jones,” “DuckTales”).
Tennant has been making major waves in his home country of the United Kingdom by being a staunch ally to the LGBTQ community. He famously told the Equalities Minister to 'shut up' over her anti-trans views. He’s also been spotted wearing various trans Pride pins (raised over $23,000, which he then donated to a queer homeless charity). Tennant continues to show his support of the queer community. He also has a child who is nonbinary.
Next there’s Dante Basco who is known for his role in the cult classic But I'm a Cheerleader. One of his lines from the movie “Dolph, homosexual varsity wrestler,” is timeless. He also was some of our awakening crush as the Lost Boy Leader, Rufio, in the classic movie Hook. Lastly, and perhaps his biggest credit, is as the voice of Prince Zuko in the animated series “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Possibly making him an awakening crush for multiple generations.
AJ Michalka will also be there. Michalka has lent her vocal talents to queer icons such as Stevonnie of “Steven Universe” series and Catra in She-Ra and the Princesses of Power. Her movie accolades include “The Lovely Bones,” “Secretariat,” and “Super 8.” She will be present with her sister, so for you "Aly & AJ" fans, now is a great opportunity to meet and get a photo with this talented duo.
If meetups are more your thing, there will be meetups galore. From Hazbin Hotel/Helluva Boss (which was previously reported with our interview with up and coming Broadway Star Blake Roman), to classics such as Sailor Moon, Disney, and Marvel, and even a Critter Tea Party.
As usual there will be a lot for cosplay fans to explore. There will be contests, repair stations, workshops on how to up your cosplay skills, photo opportunities and so much more.
All levels of experience are welcome, from ClosetPlay (cosplay gathered from your own closet's supply) to professional cosplay. You won’t want to miss these outfits. Since the advent of 3D printing, the level of detail has brought new accessibility to the field. Just remember this tip: Cosplay is not consent. Always ask before taking a photo, and never assume anyone is OK with personal touch (hugs included).
Supercon 2024 also serves as a qualifier for the Cosplay Central Crown Championship 2025. Winning here means you’ll be flown out to Chicago to compete against other cosplayers. The winner of Chicago goes to the international finals to compete for best cosplay in the world.
For those who prefer after-dark activities, Supercon has you covered. There’s a cosplay rave, a Y2K 2000s Throwback Dance Party, and several themed burlesque shows. The DJs for both parties will be Atomic Blonde and DJ Elliot. There’s also night games. This year's night game is 'Two Rooms and a Boom,' a game of social deduction and strategic gameplay, fun for all ages.
