Sarah Malega is running for re-election to District 1 in Lake Worth Beach.
In 2006, she founded PersonalAutoShoppers.com and in 2010, Malega and her wife, Dawn, opened the city’s first fitness facility, The Zoo Health Club of Lake Worth.
The election takes place March 19. Malega will face a challenge from Melvin Pinkney.
During her first term as a commission, she made LGBTQ issues a priority, including designating Lake Worth Beach as Florida’s first LGBTQ sanctuary city.
“Our mayor brought that forward and read it, but I was 100% behind it,” Malega said. “I've created the first city’s LGBTQ liaison for staff and residents. My very first month in office, when they did my ID badge, I asked to have my pronouns on my badge. Nobody in HR knew what I was talking about, so I had to educate them on pronouns.”
She’s been endorsed by the Palm Beach Post and a slew of LGBTQ organizations, including the Palm Beach County Human Rights Council; Equality Florida; LGBTQ+ Victory Fund; and LPAC.
According to her campaign website, her other accomplishments during her first term include:
– Oversaw the installation of five water fountains throughout the city, providing access to clean drinking water for all.
– Supported the community in the revitalization of the Unity Wall on Wingfield.
– Advocated for the approval of Gulfstream Hotel.
– Assisted in the creation of a City Charter review, advocating for term limits and single district voting.
– Championed the mandatory use of PBSO body cameras for Lake Worth Beach.
– Established an LGBTQ liaison and is actively working towards the Human Rights Council Municipal Equality Index.
– Created a Hometown Hero Challenge Coin to honor those who sacrifice for the benefit of others.
